Perry's first attempts at becoming a mainstream superstar were unsuccessful. Two record labels signed her and then removed her from the market before she'd released any music. Capitol Records released Perry's Ur So Gay EP in 2007, which received little attention for its jolly playful song. I Kissed a Girl - an ode to sexual curiosity dropped a couple of months later. It had a hard electro-pop style and an assertive attitude. A few critics accused it of promoting homosexual relationships, while others claimed the song's sexually explicit lyrics were designed to attract men with fantasies. I Kissed a Girl, an enthralling combination of sexual satire with a sophisticated melody, helped I Kissed a Girl to be a top-rated hit in a variety of countries, and to drive the sales of her album One of the Boys. Its bouncy, sharp-tongued and bouncy second single Hot N Cold also proving popular the album much of the songs Perry wrote herself eventually registered the sales of over 3 million copies across the United States.
